In the first two weeks of January 1947, amid painting the Kelly series, Nolan"s focus switched briefly to a series of works on paper relating to the same theme. The couple depicted and the decorative wallpaper draw comparison with the Kelly series painting Constable Fitzpatrick and Kate Kelly , in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, painted in October 1946. Within days of completing the present work Nolan painted three of his best known Kelly works, Quilting the Armour , Stringybark Creek and The Trial .
